In his ten years behind the decks, DJ Brian ‘Docta’ Dawe, has experienced things some artists only fantasize about – and others that would make most DJs throw in the towel.
Hailing from Orlando, Florida, Dawe’s on-cue mixing, diverse track selection, and scratching techniques are what set this veteran apart from your average nightclub DJ. His turntable style and original exclusive remixes have made him a staple in the Florida nightclub scene. Well-versed in multiple genres, Dawe can rock your party with house, indie-electro, hip-hop, rock, old-school, open format, or anything else with a beat.
Brian entered the DJ game in 2000, where little did he know a visit to a local pawnshop would change everything. That was the day he made the best investment of his life: two used Gemini turntables and an old Radio Shack mixer for $200. Like most kids, he went home and played all night and into the next day. He was hooked. At 17, He was exposed to electronic music for the first time, and spent most of his time buying the records he heard in the club at the local record store. He dove head first into the rave scene, playing at legendary raves such as “Liquified”, “Imagine”, and “The Turntables Massacre”. And that’s where the ruckus on the dance floor began.
After countless hours of sweat and tears behind the tables, amassing years of hard work and dedication, Dawe found himself on top of the Florida nightlife scene. He has been very active as a DJ, radio host, remix producer, event organizer, and promoter throwing hundreds of parties and playing over a thousand events. In 2008, he was voted top DJ in Orlando by the highly respected “Orlando Weekly“ magazine. After regularly playing guest spots from Jacksonville to Miami, he was able to achieve what most DJs consider one of the hallmarks of success: a spot on the Ultra Music Festival line-up.
Not just once, but twice, although an unfortunate twist of fate would sideline his first Ultra Music Festival appearance. In what he considers a major turning point in his career, Dawe was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2009. He spent a large portion of the year receiving chemotherapy treatment. He focused on music and honing his craft, and six months later, after a reoccurrence, beat cancer again.
Not content to give up on what most would consider “game over”, he moved southward and pumped his patriotic mix in front of over 40,000 guests at the West Palm Beach 4th of July Festival. Now add in the over 200,000 listeners of the live simulcast on West Palm Beach radio, and you have an audience most DJs can only dream about. In the summer of 2010, Dawe also garnered the opening DJ spot for the Tampa stop of Rihanna and Ke$ha’s “Last Girl On Earth” tour, and rocked the over 12,000 in attendance.
He has played multiple events with MTV and VH1 show cast members, Playboy playmates, and spun vinyl alongside or opened for countless popular acts. The aforementioned Rihanna & Ke$ha, Steve Aoki (twice), Gabe Saporta of Cobra Starship, Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes, Adam 12 of She Wants Revenge, DJ Baby Anne, Skeet Skeet (Shwayze), Riva Starr, DJ Serafin, Datarock, Ladytron, and 2 Live Crew are just a sampling of artists he has shared the stage with.
As you can see from several of his previous events and shows, versatility and creativity is a key trait in a DJ. Brian Dawe has mastered this, utilizing his skills in remix production to move his “House Forever” track all the way to the number two spot on the highly coveted Hype Machine chart. His outstanding production has also been featured on CrooklynClan.net and various other websites and compilations. Dawe currently holds five residencies across Florida including the world-renowned Icebar Orlando, which boasts the largest bar in the world and was recently featured on the Travel Channel and Food Network. His trademark crowd-hyping, fist-pumping antics have become some of the most influential sights and sounds in Florida, from coast to coast.
As of the summer of 2010, Dawe is and has been cancer free. His focus continues to be on making music and making history.
